Alfred “Al” Kenneth Defoor, 84, of Emporia, Kansas, died on January 19, 2013 at his home in Emporia.
Al was born on May 24, 1928 in Drasco, Arkansas, the oldest son of Birt J. and Martha Lois Bufford Defoor. He married Madine Schellhamer on September 23, 1951 in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
He is survived by: his wife; sons, Terry Defoor of Kirkland, Washington, and Jim Defoor and wife Deanne of Manhattan, Kansas; daughters, Diane Simmons and husband Craig of Houston, Texas, Linda Markham and husband Bill of Emporia, and Tammy Vopat and husband Jon of Emporia; brothers, Jurld Defoor of Drasco, Arkansas, Eddie Defoor of Pleaseant Plains, Arkansas, and Roy Lee Defoor of Conway, Arkansas; sisters, Martha O’Riley of Watervliet, Michigan, Myrtle Young of Conway, Arkansas, Donna Mae Stair of Clinton, Arkansas, and Louetta Erwin of Emporia; grandchildren, Matt and Travis Defoor, Jeremy and Kelly Simmons, Jennifer Graham, Spencer Tressler, Chad Mercer, Weston Defoor, Mallory Defoor, Matt Vopat, and Michelle Hoag; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by parents; and sisters, Mary Peel, Estavell Hunt, and Katherine Defoor.
When Al came to Emporia in 1955, he operated Mack’s Lunch, he later owned and operated Al’s Auto Salvage. He also worked as a welder for Blacktop Construction and Coffman Construction. After retirement he spent numerous years enjoying his woodworking shop. Al was an avid catfish fisherman. He was a member of First Friends Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at First Friends Church in Emporia. Cremation will follow the service. A Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to First Friends Church, and sent in care of the funeral home.
