Alice Jean “Jean” Guthrie, 86, of Emporia, Kansas, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born April 8, 1940, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, to Roy Lasseter and Sarah Alice McGraw. Jean spent her high-school years in Phoenix, Arizona, and later raised her children in California before the family moved to Kansas, where they settled in Emporia.
On February 25, 1960, she married Gerald LeRoy Guthrie in Tempe, Arizona. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2008.
In Emporia, Jean worked as a deli manager at Dillons and later as a manager with the Kansas Turnpike, where she formed lifelong friendships with the people she worked alongside. She was a great cook and took pride in feeding the people she loved. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, celebrating Christmas and Easter, and watching them grow. She enjoyed reading, attending exercise and book club, and traveling—Ireland was her favorite destination. Jean and her sisters were very close, more like best friends than siblings. Her nieces and nephews loved their Aunt Jean and remember her with a great deal of affection. Friends and family remember her as kind and gentle, someone who was always ready to help and often went above and beyond. She had a habit of buying two of everything and took genuine delight in the technological changes she witnessed over her lifetime.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald LeRoy Guthrie; her son, Brent Guthrie; her twin brother, Bucky Lasseter; her brother, Michael Lasseter; and her sister, Peggy Timbrooks.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Jerry and Jeanine Guthrie, Bobbie and Dave Duncan and Kathy and Brian Pitman; her sisters Sharon Ehmann and Patsy Herbert of Arizona; three grandchildren—Travis Guthrie, Tyler Duncan and Heather Foster, and nine great-grandchildren: Haddie, Evie, Jed, Elanor, Winnie, Alex, Ben, Avery, and Sutton.
