ALICE WINIFRED GATEWOOD, Emporia, Kansas, died at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the age of 92.
  
  
  Alice Winifred “Winnie” Grimsley was born at Americus, Kansas on May 5, 1918, the daughter of John and Anna Christensen Grimsley. She married Carroll Gatewood at Emporia, Kansas on May 9, 1941, at which time she moved to Emporia. He died in Emporia in 1988.
  
  
  Surviving family members include:
  
  Daughters: Karol Ann McChesney (Don)of Munden, Kansas; Barbara Kay Wright (Frank) of Gower, Missouri
  
  
  Son: Roy John Gatewood (Laura Kay) of Emporia, Kansas
  
  
  Seven Grandchilden: Ginger Sims, Alison Schultz, Roanna Fultz, Marc McChesney, John McChesney, Brian Wright, Cassia Wright
  
  
  Fourteen Great Grandchildren
  
  
  Brothers: Jack Grimsley and Dale Grimsley, both of Americus, Kansas
  
  
  Sister: Mildred Daharsh of Emporia, Kansas
  
  
  Preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and a great-grandson, Dylan Malm.
  
  
  She was a member of the Americus United Methodist Church; the Newman Hospital Auxiliary; Retired Teacher Association; Americus Chapter #315 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron 4 times, and as Grand Representative to Maine from Kansas. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, the Democratic Party of Lyon County, Bethel HDU, and La Sertoma.
  
  
  She attended Wheeler Grade School, Americus Rural High School (Class of ’36), and Kansas State Normal School, from which she received a 3 year teaching certificate.
  
  
  Mrs. Gatewood was a teacher for four years at Badger Creek and Maxson rural schools in Lyon County. From 1956 to 1981, she worked for Kansas Power & Light, retiring after 25 years.
  
  
  Funeral services will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Monday, August 16, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Gina Giles, Americus United Methodist Church, Americus, Kansas. Interment will be in the Americus Cemetery, Americus.
  
  
  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
