Ann De La Torre Villa, 81, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society rest home in Dodge City, Kansas.
On Friday, May 5, 2017, a Rosary will be recited for her at 9:30 A.M., with a funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 A.M. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 205 South Lawrence St., Emporia, Kansas; burial will be in Number Eight Cemetery, Madison, Kansas. Memorial contributions to Good Samaritan Society may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Ann was born March 7, 1936 in Madison, Kansas. She attended school in Madison, and graduated in 1955. She then lived in Emporia and worked in many different capacities of nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital for numerous years. In the 1970’s, she became an LPN. She later transitioned into working at retirement facilities; she worked as many as three jobs at once to provide for her family.
When nursing became too strenuous, she worked as an interpreter in the medical field. In 2006, Ann moved to Dodge City where her daughter lives. She became an Ombudsman for the state of Kansas, and visited several rest homes in southwest Kansas.
Ann enjoyed spending time with her family; especially reading, playing her Nintendo D.S., telling jokes, and she absolutely LOVED garage sales. One of the highlights of her life was seeing comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias in Dodge City.
Two days before joining Jesus in Heaven, she attended the “Los Tigres del Norte” concert, where she got to meet an shake the hand of her idol, Hernan Hernandez. She had a wonderful time.
During the four months she lived at the Good Samaritan Society, she looked out for and helped her fellow residents.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Tomas and Nicolasa (Hernandez) De La Torre; sisters that died in infancy, Antonia and Jesucita; sisters, Catherine Reyes, Bertha Villanueva, Faye (Aurelia) Cisneros, Mary (Nico) Garcia, and Margaret Tabares; stepsister, Mary Casillas; brother, Jesse De La Torre; and stepbrothers, Selso and John Hernandez.
She is survived by a brother, Phillip De La Torre of Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Margaret (Carlos) De La Peña of Dodge City; granddaughter, Lizette De La Peña (Todd) Goldsmith and their children Gabriel and Autumn Goldsmith of Auburn, KS; granddaughter, Marilyn De La Peña of Lawrence, KS; son, Felipe Villa of Wheatridge, CO; and a granddaughter, Marea Faye Atchinson of Lawrence. Ann is also survived by many nieces and nephews that she cherished and adored.
