Anna Kayser Harder

April 15, 1918 — February 24, 2011

Anna Kayser Harder, of the Bushong/Americus area , died at her home on Thursday, February 24, 2011. She was 92.

Anna Kayser was born north of Americus on April 15, 1918, the daughter of Karl Henry and Antonie (Ohlhoff) Kayser. She married Calvin Spencer Harder at Topeka, Kansas on September 16, 1943. He died at the family farm north of Americus on August 18, 1999.

Surviving family members include: son, Russell D. Harder, Council Grove; daughters, Gloria J. Baxter, Emporia, Kansas, and Rowena K. Eichoff, Falls City, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Contessa M. Richter, Christopher E. Harder, Ashley D. Stuerke, Adam T. Eichoff, and Brieanna R. Baxter; three great-grandchildren, Kirsten A. Richter, Carryn J. Richter, and Ethan A. Stuerke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Richard Lee Harder (who died at age 4), and brothers, Karl T. Kayser and Frederic Kayser.

Mrs. Harder attended school in Americus, graduating in 1934. She then attended Strickler School of Business at age 16, the youngest in her class. After graduation, Anna worked in Manhattan for the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the first corn project. She was promoted to Washington, D.C. to work at the business census center.

She returned to Americus in 1943 to marry Calvin. She worked at the Twin Valley Creamery, the livestock sales barn in Emporia, and Americus State Bank for 23 years, before “retiring”.

She volunteered at the Lyon County Historical Society clipping newspaper articles, and also helped with the Chamber of Commerce newsletter mailings. Anna loved riding the L-Cat to the Senior Center for lunch.

Anna always gave of her talents. She loved to crochet around coat hangers. She became known as the “hanger lady”. She also loved to make loomed rugs with material in a process called rippling. Anna then became known as the “rug lady”. Anna always had a sparkle and a smile for everyone she met. Her perfect days came when she collected hugs from as many people as possible. She progressed to being known as the “hug lady” then.

Funeral services will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by her nephew, Mr. Charles Kayser, from Topeka. Interment will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery, north of Americus.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening, February 28, 2011, from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
