Arthur J. Tabares, 61, of Emporia, died Saturday, October 10, 2015 at his home. Cremation is planned.
Arthur Joseph Tabares, the son of Antonio and Carmen Torres Tabares, was born on August 12, 1954 in Emporia. He married Lori Sue Dase on July 24, 1982 in Emporia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia. Fr. Brandon Farrar will celebrate the Mass. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
Art had been a counselor and taught Spanish for USD 253, was a professor at Emporia State University, and most recently was a therapist at the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, he was active in Mexican-American Groups in Emporia, and had served on the USD 253 School Board.
He is survived by his wife, Lori Tabares of the home; two sons, Brian John Tabares of Dayton, Ohio, and Tyler Joseph Tabares of Emporia; a daughter, Staci Marie (Tyler) Stephenson of Lenexa; four brothers, Tony Tabares of Chanute, James Tabares and Edward Tabares, both of Emporia, and Jeff Tabares of Wichita; and one sister, Veronica Granado of Emporia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Tabares; and a sister, Patricia Mendoza.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Art Tabares Fund for children with Leukemia and related diseases with Emporia State Federal Credit Union. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
