Barbara Jean Hunter died October 9, 2014 at The Emporia Presbyterian Manor of congestive heart failure. She was born April 4, 1930 to Anna Misner Miller and Lawrence Miller, in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Barbara spent her early years in Pittsburg, later moving to Topeka, Kansas and graduating from Topeka High School. A member of Kappa Delta Sorority, she graduated in 1952 from Kansas State University with a B.S. in History. Always a Wildcat!

She met Gene Hunter at Capper Publications of Topeka, and they were married on December 6, 1953. They moved their family to Emporia in 1958 and became active members of the community through business and many civic and private organizations.

In 1962, Barbara and Gene built a residence for female students during a housing shortage at Emporia State University. For five years she oversaw 22 college girls, along with raising her own family. In 1972, they launched The Shopper where she served as general manager until retirement in 1987.

Barbara was involved with many organizations over the years, including Social Services, Futures Unlimited Investment Club, Emporia Regional Quilt Guild, Kansas Women’s Golf Association, P.E.O. Chapter HY, Research Study Club, First United Methodist Circle “Young Mothers”, and Emporia Arts Council. Over her life she enjoyed playing golf and bridge, quilting, learning about investing, and traveling to see family.

Barbara is survived by son, Todd Hunter and wife Ann of North Carolina, and daughter, Becky Clontz and husband Randy of Texas. Also surviving are grandchildren, Christopher Clontz and Kevin and Megan Clontz, and Kate, Jake, Matt Hunter, and Andrew and Christine (Hunter) Lucas. She is predeceased by her husband, Gene Hunter, who passed away earlier this year.

Special thanks to Dan Markowitz, Teresa Trester, and Hope Bafford of Gentiva Hospice and the staff of the Jones Health Center at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. While Barbara had multiple health issues throughout her adult life, she never slowed down until the overlap of these issues became too much to bear. She will be remembered for her resilience, her generous spirit, and her ability to always look forward regardless of her circumstances.
