Barbara Anne Smith, 79, of Emporia, KS, died on February 5, 2014, surrounded by family at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

"Bobbie" was born on February 6, 1934 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the daughter of Millard W. Jr., and Lillian Hall Baldwin. She graduated from Glen Ridge High School in 1952 and attended Colby College in Maine where she met Air Force pilot, Jay Winthrop Smith.

After graduation, Bobbie worked as an American Airlines stewardess until her marriage in 1957 in Abilene, Texas. Bobbie and Jay lived near various military bases around the county until Jay passed away in July of 1976 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Bobbie remained in Leavenworth while her daughters finished high school and worked tirelessly as a civilian sponsor for Jordanian families of international military students who were attending the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth.

As a warm-hearted cat lover, Bobbie earned fame as the Cat Lady of Leavenworth. She loved spending time with her family each summer at her lake house in Sebago, Maine. She will be remembered as a generous and loving mother and an adventurous and big-hearted grandma.

Survivors include her daughters, Sandy Loucks (Gary) of Emporia, Cindy Smith (Ricky Linsday) of Nokesville, Virginia, and Wendy Moon of Forest, Virginia; and grandchildren, Kristi Moon, Andrew Moon, Jordan Moon, Jennie Loucks, Jacob Loucks, Jessi Loucks, Kyle Linsday, Alex Linsday, Jamie Cristali, and Kindra McCormick. She also has four great-grandchildren, Loie and Satch Cristali, and Ava and Jack McCormick; and one nephew, Geoffrey Donelan (Yukie) of Tokyo, Japan.

Bobbie bequeathed her body to the Kansas University School of Medicine. A celebration of her life will be held at Timmerman Elementary, Emporia, at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014.
