Bernadette C. Hamman, 91, Emporia, Kansas, passed away at her home Tuesday, March 15, 2016.
Bernadette Caroline Baalman was born May 4, 1924 at Grinnell, Kansas, the daughter of Anthony and Amelia (Ladenberger) Baalman. She married Wendell “Bud” Hamman in Burlington, Kansas, on September 19, 1943. He died May 22, 1990.
She is survived by her sons, Danny Hamman (Kathy), Americus, KS, Richard Hamman (Staci), Emporia, and Russell Hamman (Raquel), Tonganoxie, KS; daughters, Gayla Streck (John), Irving, TX, and Ronda Alberg (Paul Lapping), Wichita, KS, son-in-law, Keith Carnes, DeSoto, KS; sisters, Isabelle Barry, Glendale, OR, Arvella Schriner, Dodge City, KS, and Betty Vance, Bettendorf, Iowa; twenty-seven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hamman was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; a daughter, Sharon Carnes; son, Steve Hamman; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
She worked at Hallmark Cards in Emporia before going to IBP in Emporia and had been retired several years. She attended school in Grinnell, Kansas and graduated from Colby (Kansas) High School and had attended Fort Hays State University.
Her memberships include the Lucky Day Home Extension Unit, Blood Mobile Volunteer, and volunteered at the snack shop at Newman Regional Health. After her retirement, she was chosen to be on a senior advisory board for the Lyon County Council on Aging. She was the first person in Emporia to be awarded “Recycler of the Year”.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, and the Altar Society of the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 10:00 A.M., with Father Brandon Farrar, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Friday evening, March 18, 2016 at 7:00 P.M. The family will receive friends following the Rosary.
