Bernie Eugene “Gene” Cusic, 91, of Emporia died at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka on Saturday, February 10, 2018.
Gene was born on May 22, 1926 on a farm Northwest of Americus, Kansas the son of Joseph Bernie and Elsie Belle Moore Cusic. He married Jacqueline Jean Cripps on October 13, 1950 in Emporia. She survives at the home.
Surviving family members include: wife, Jacqueline Jean Cusic of Emporia; daughter Karen Darting and husband Ken of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Krista Darting of Manhattan, Kansas and Kerry Darting of Topeka, Kansas.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Cusic; brothers, Erwin Cusic and Marvin Cusic.
Gene attended schools in Americus and graduated there in 1944. He worked for a short time for the Santa Fe Railroad before going into the Navy from 1944 to 1946. After the military he enrolled at the Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia in the fall of 1946 and also played four years of basketball for the college. In 1950 he took his first teaching and coaching job at Lebo and was there five years and then to Paola for one year. Gene came to Lowther Junior High School from 1956 to 1986 as a teacher, coach, and then as Assistant Principal. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporia. Gene was also the Emporia Man of the Week.
Gene willed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center. A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Midland Hospice Care, ESU Foundation (basketball), Camp Alexander or the First United Methodist Church can be sent in care of the funeral home.
