Beryl Edwina Childears

February 12, 1931 — May 4, 2013

Beryl Edwina Tipping Childears, 82, a resident of Emporia, Kansas, passed away at her home Saturday morning, May 4, 2013.

Beryl Edwina Tipping was born in Yiewsley, Middlesex, England on February 12, 1931, the daughter of Edward Charles and Ada Rosa Tidbury Tipping. She married Maurice A. Childears in the Saint Mathews Church, Church of England, Yiewsley, Middlesex, England on 4 April, 1953. He died December 26, 2011.

She is survived by her two children, Dianne Childears Ihling, Reading, Kansas, and Dale Edward Childears of the home. She is survived by her sister, Jean Tipping Squires Butler of Feltham, Middlesex, England. She was a beloved Aunt, Great-Aunt and Great-Great Aunt to many, both in the USA and in England. Many of her daughters’ friends know her as Lovey, her daughter's name for her mother. She was also affectionately known as Bess or Aunt B.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Eileen (Peg) Tipping Batt, and Hilda Tipping Guest, as well as her parents.

Mrs. Childears was a child during World War II and survived the Battle of Britain. She often talked of her time in the air-raid shelter and of coupon rationing, living for little luxuries that we now take for granted, like fresh eggs and sugar. Prior to marriage, she was a Telephone Operator for the Royal Telephone & Telegraph Service for H.R.H. King George VI. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and frequently went dancing in her late teens/early 20's at Hammersmith Palladium.

Not long after she was married in 1953, she and her husband were stationed in Kansas. She emigrated to the USA via ship. In the 50's and 60's, air travel was much more of a luxury and she did not see or talk to her family in England very often. She kept connected with her roots by enjoying the UK programming on Public Television. Mostly, she liked spending time with those she loved and who loved her. She was a homemaker and successfully raised two children, one with special needs. Mrs. Childears was a lifelong advocate for the intellectually and developmentally disabled in Arlington, Virginia and Emporia, Kansas

After marriage, she accompanied her husband on postings with the US Air Force. Upon his retirement, the family settled in Arlington, Virginia and lived there for 35 years. In 2004, she, her husband, and son returned to Emporia, followed soon after by her daughter and her husband.

Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Thursday evening, May 9, 2013 at 6:00 PM. The service will be conducted by Pastors Andrew McHenry, First Congregational Church, Emporia, and Pastor Brenda Ulrich, Americus Presbyterian Church, Americus.
