Betty Lou Akers

July 27, 1932 — August 5, 2012

Betty Lou Bond Akers, 80, of Madison, Kansas, passed away at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas on Sunday, August 5, 2012 following a brief illness.


The daughter of Lon H. Bond Sr. and Nancy Carol French Bond, she was born in Fairland, Oklahoma on July 27, 1932 and graduated from Fairland High School. She attended NEO A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma and completed business and commercial courses. For several years, she was employed at two title and abstract companies in Miami, Oklahoma.


She was united in marriage on December 18, 1951 to James T. Akers of Jay, Oklahoma. Following her husband’s military service, the couple returned to Miami where her husband was a teacher and principal in the Miami school system. The couple and their daughter moved to Kansas in 1965 where her husband served as Superintendent of Schools at Piper, Lenora, and Madison. In Madison, she was the business manager at Brinkman Chevrolet-Olds for 10 years.


Mrs. Akers was a member of the United Methodist Church of Madison, a former member of the Civic Culture Club of Madison, and served as President and later Treasurer of the Madison Public Library Board. A significant accomplishment in the 1980s was her organization of LIFT (Learning Is Fun Together), a community free school project in Madison. She was an avid reader who was always found with at least two books in progress by her chair and bedside.


Mrs. Akers is survived by her husband of the home and her daughter, Cynthia M. Akers of Emporia, Kansas. She is also survived by her brothers: Corbin Bond of Miami; Lon H. Bond Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Thomas Bond of Miami; and Kenneth Bond of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her daughter’s fiancé, Shannon Kane of Madison; and many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends in Kansas.


A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 11:00A.M. at Evergreen Cemetery in Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor John Davis, Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, Emporia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Betty Lou Bond Akers Memorial Fund at the Emporia State University Foundation or to the Madison Public Library.
