Betty Jo Commons, 90, of Emporia died on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.
Betty was born on October 18, 1926 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph J. and Eula Geraldine West Penna. She married Bob D. Commons on August 7, 1949 in Topeka, Kansas. He survives.
Surviving family members include: husband, Bob D. Commons of Emporia; sons, Steve(Pam) Commons of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Mark(Brenda) Commons of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister, Barbara Chouteau of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Michelle Carmitchel and Stephanie Billet both of Basehor, Kansas, Tina Commons of Wichita, Kansas, Amy Wiggs of Topeka, Kansas and Jenny Morrison of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; thirteen great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Betty received her A.B. degree in 1949 from the College of Emporia. She was a Home Economics teacher for four years at Virgil High School, after that she was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Emporia; Miriam Chapter #14 Order of the Eastern Star, Emporia; PEO Chapter GT, Emporia; United Methodist Women and the Flint Hills Regional Quilt Guild.
Cremation is planned with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The family will receive friends an hour before service time. Private burial will be at a later day at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Memorial contributions to the Shriner's Hospitals or Emporia State University Foundation Commons Family Scholarship can be sent in care of the funeral home.
