Betty Jeanne Rice, Emporia, Kansas, died at Sterling House in Emporia on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the age of 91.
  
  
  
  Betty Jeanne Gardner was born at Kansas City, Missouri on November 4, 1922, the daughter of Richard Allen, and Johanna Fredricka (Arnold) Gardner. She married Floyd Edward Rice on August 10, 1941 at Ottawa, Kansas. He died October 28, 1988.
  
  
  
  Surviving family members include: her children, Jolene Schmidt of Lewisville, Texas, Jeanne Linville of Edmond, Oklahoma, Patti Shaffer (Leland) of Douglass, Kansas, Jim Rice, (Jacque) of Elk City, Kansas, and Janet Peterson (Ed) of Emporia; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
  
  
  
  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd Edward “Bud” Rice, Sr.; son, Floyd Rice, Jr.; grandsons, John Peterson and Craig Linville; and sisters, Marie Rhine, Pearl Johnson, and Louise Henley.
  
  
  
  Betty was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Emporia. She was a homemaker, and had been the cook at Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. In 1996, Mrs. Rice was awarded “Older Worker of the Year” by the Older Kansans Employment Program, and in March of 1997, she was The Emporia Gazette “Woman of the Week.”
  
  
  
  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor James Scott, of the church. Interment will take place at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 21, 2014 Woodlawn Cemetery, west of Pomona, Kansas.
