Betty Jean Zumbrum, 94, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Betty Jean was born on January 14, 1923 in Americus, Kansas the daughter of Earl and Bessie Bean Keller. She married Walter Albert Zumbrum on June 5, 1946 in Emporia, and they enjoyed over 69 years of marriage. They farmed northwest of Americus throughout their entire marriage. Walt died on September 24, 2015 in Emporia.
Survivors include: sons, David Zumbrum of Homewood, KS and Joseph Zumbrum (Terri) of Americus; a daughter, Dinah Dykes of Topeka, KS; nine grandchildren, Jan Zumbrum of Phoenix, AZ, Mike (Carrie) Zumbrum of Meriden, KS, Michelle Zumbrum of Emporia, Paul (Tiffany) Dykes of Grain Valley, MO, Steven Dykes of Topeka, Jessica (Brad) McCarty of Nashville, TN, Alyson (Brad) Furline, Fairview, TN, Sarah (James) Mullinax, Fairview, TN; and Christena Zumbrum, Council Grove, twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Walter Albert Zumbrum, two sons, John J. Zumbrum and Thomas L. Zumbrum, one brother, Kenneth Keller and three sisters, Enid Rogers, Kathleen Karr and Patricia Crayk.
Betty Jean was a teacher during WWII and taught in a one room school house. She later was a librarian for the Americus Library, and a homemaker. She taught piano lessons in the community for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Americus and often played the piano or organ for the church.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia with burial following at the Americus Cemetery, Americus. Visitation will be from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday night at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to the Americus Township Library and can be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
