Bill graduated Emporia High School in 1945. Although a childhood accident left Bill blind in one eye, the injury didn’t deter him from a lifelong interest in all things mechanical. He became the neighborhood repair boy for friend’s bikes and lawn mowers. Bill began his professional career at Ross Latimer’s Maytag Sales Company in Emporia. He trained under the late Orville Smith and became known as one of the best small engine repair mechanics in and around Lyon County.
After Benner William’s Furniture and Appliances purchased Latimer’s Maytag Franchise, Bill advanced to lead appliance repairman for the Company. During his tenure at Benner Williams, Bill worked with store manager John Guion, and joined John’s staff at Guion’s Showcase Furniture and Appliance Company.
Retirement never slowed Bill’s mechanical interests. He was always on call to help friends and family with their mechanical repairs. He was an avid gardener and fisherman of the Cottonwood River, area ponds and lakes. Sunday morning was a hub of activity in Bill’s garage. For decades friends gathered for card games, beer drinking, and telling tall fish stories.
