Bonnie Turney Schmidt, 93, Emporia, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 8, 2026, at Homestead Emporia.
Bonnie Lee McCabe was born in Bazaar, Kansas on September 27, 1932, the daughter of James B. and Mildred V. “Verna” Heathman McCabe. She married Charles E, Turney on September 6, 1953, in Elmdale, Kansas. He passed away on August 30, 1986. On October 30, 1987, Bonnie married Robert P. Schmidt in Emporia. He died November 15, 2012. Surviving family members include her son; Brent A. (Linda) Turney, Emporia, Kansas, daughter; Charla (Bill) Charlsen, Newton, Kansas, stepdaughter; Pam (Alan) Enright, Aurora, Colorado, and many grand and great-grandchildren.
Bonnie was the last survivor of 9 siblings. She was preceded by her two husbands, son; Wade A. Turney, and stepson; Robert Schmidt, Jr.
Bonnie assisted her husband, Charles, in their dental office. She was also a licensed RN and after his death worked as a nurse in the Internal Medicine Associates office. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Emporia. She had also been a member of Chapter ES of PEO, Beta Sigma Phi, Etude Study Club, the Women’s City Club, and had served on the Board of Directors of the Emporia Friends of the Zoo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Emporia on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Tuesday evening, June 16, 2026, at 6:30 P.M. Family and friends will visit following the Rosary. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia
The family requests no flowers with memorial contributions made to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas.
