Brenda Annelle Shaw

January 14, 1942 — April 10, 2016

Brenda Annelle Shaw, 74, died Sunday April 10, 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Brenda Annelle was born January 14, 1942 in LaFayette, Indiana, the daughter of Eugene and Yvonne (Carr) Goatley. In 1964, Brenda graduated from Kansas State University where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and received her B.A. in Education. Following graduation, she taught high school physical education and health in Mesa, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri. On June 26th, 1965, she married Walter Irving (Irv) Shaw in Wichita, KS.

Motherhood was Brenda’s most desired career and by the age of 34, she had five children ages five and under. She had two sets of twins five years apart in age and a daughter just two years older than the youngest twins. She spent many hours carpooling her children to piano lessons, swim lessons, drill team, sporting events, etc., often times dropping one child off while picking up another. Brenda was the biggest cheerleader and advocate for her children and never missed a performance or game. Family was also very important to Brenda. Amongst all of her children’s events, she made sure that every night, no matter what the time of evening, her family of seven sat down at the kitchen table for dinner together.

When not cheering on her children at one of their events, Brenda enjoyed several hobbies. Her favorite past time was on the golf course improving her game. She made many life-long friends on the course and treasured the great memories they shared. She was a member of the Emporia County Club and served as the President of the Emporia County Club Women’s Golf Association for two years, where she was a founder of the Early Bird Tournament. She loved to watch birds and was considered an expert in naming most any bird she saw while on the course. She enjoyed reading and recently found a new love for pickleball. Brenda was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia.

Brenda is survived by her children: son, David Shaw and wife Courtney of Overland Park, Kansas; daughters, Kimberly Shaw of Merriam, Kansas, Kristen Sanchez and husband Gilbert of El Dorado, Kansas, and Lisa Hafliger and husband Clint of Manhattan, Kansas; and grandchildren, Logan Shaw, Conner Shaw, Whitney Shaw, Kynzie Sanchez, Kru Sanchez, Mason Hafliger, and Avery Hafliger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Irving; and a daughter, Jennifer Shaw.
