Charles Frederick Swint

July 31, 1921 — May 18, 2011

Charles Frederick Swint passed away May 18, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kansas, following a gradual decline in his health. He was 89.

He was born on July 31, 1921 in Emporia, Kansas, the seventh of eight children to James F. and Rose Alta Hayden Swint.

Charles grew up, attended school, worked, married, lived in, and served the Emporia community most of his life. He was proud to be an Emporia boy and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. He graduated from Emporia High School in 1939, and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 following service in WWII. He belonged to many organizations and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

Charlie never met a stranger and could talk to anyone about anything. He was a true and loyal friend to many. He was in the dairy business for many years, developing his incredible work ethic as a small child working for the Nelson and Osborn Dairies, and progressing to managing Hoch Dairy and partnering with Orville Hoch in owning Victory Dairy. He later became Sales Manager for Thomas Transfer and Storage where he worked until he retired in 1986.

If you knew Charles, you knew that the most important part of his life was his family. They were always in his heart and on his mind. He was a devoted son and loving Brother, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, but the love of his life was Betty Leckron, that sweet little girl from Abilene, Kansas. They met in 1939, and as he always said, “that was that”. Charles and Betty married on July 5, 1941 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. His dedication and love for his wife was unwavering, and they were rarely more than a hand-clasp apart as they walked this life together for nearly 67 years. Their commitment to each other is truly a challenge and example for future generations. Together they loved, supported, and were proud of each of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, making a special effort to be actively involved in their lives even from afar. They often traveled great distances to attend sporting events, graduations, weddings, or just to see their “little people”.

Charles was an avid K-State fan. He and Betty attended basketball and football games well into their 80’s. Go Cats!

Charles is survived by: his children, Jim Swint of Kansas City, Missouri, and Nan Rees of Holladay, Utah; brother, Dale Swint of Sonoma, California; five grandchildren, Angie Swint of Dallas, Texas, Ab(Jenny) Rees, Aaron(Jill) Rees, Alisha (Jim) Brubaker, Ashley (Chris) Kirkpatrick; eight great grandchildren, Aaron, Aubree, Lexy and Abby Rees, Jake and Alex Brubaker, and Connor and Ava Kirkpatrick, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his dear wife Betty; parents; and siblings, Minnie Tissue, Ralph, Harold, John, Adeline and Gilbert Swint.

The family would like to extend thanks to those special friends that helped watch over Charles in the years following Betty’s death. You have been a great comfort and blessing to us. You know who you are. Also thanks to the staff of Presbyterian Manor for your loving care and support.
