Cheryl Ann Barton, 68, Emporia, Kansas, passed away at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Monday April 27, 2026 after a long battle with cancer.
Cheryl Ann Morgan was born in Emporia, Kansas on July 30, 1957, the daughter of Clifford D. and Wanda Mae (Baker) Morgan. She married Gary L. Barton at the Lyon County Courthouse, Emporia, Kansas on June 28, 1991. He survives of the home. She is also survived by her son; Chad (Julia) Barton, Gravois Mills, Missouri, daughter; Mandy D. Winkert, Freeman, Missouri, several nieces and nephews, including Jessica Morgan, Mobile, Illinois.
She received her Bachelor and Masters degree in Education from Emporia State University. She taught at Sacred Heart School in Emporia from August 1995 until May, 2006. Then substitute taught in USD 253, Emporia during the 2006-07 school year. She taught Special Education at Lowther North Attendance Center from 2007 until the school was closed and transferred to Emporia Middle School in 2011. She transferred to Council Grove schools and taught Special Education through the end of the 2016-2017 school year, when she retired.
Cheryl studied the Civil War and the lives of that time. To share that interest she brought in reenactors to her classroom. Cheryl also introduced her students to native american culture by inviting tribal members in. She followed the Kansas City Chiefs, enjoyed throwing darts with friends, and cooking. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Emporia.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 10:30 A.M. A graveside service will be held at the Sunset Gardens Cemetery, El Dorado, Kansas that afternoon at 2:30. The family will receive friends at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Monday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
A memorial has been established for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, with contributions sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801
