Clarence L. Schmidt (83), lifetime resident of Olpe, Kansas, passed away on April 7, 2011 at his home following a longtime battle with heart disease and kidney failure.
  
  
  He was born on April 6, 1928 at Olpe to Leonard L. and Ida (Sterbenz) Schmidt. He attended school at Olpe and on Sept. 8, 1951 he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Kuhlmann at Maydale, Kansas. She survives of the home. They were blessed with six children: Deanna Burton, Jeff Schmidt, and Glen Schmidt of Emporia, Doug Schmidt and Charlotte Coble of Olpe, and Judy Andersen of Glenwood, Iowa. He is also survived by four sisters, Leonarda Hendersen and Lillian Spellman both of Emporia, Corrine Frizell of Olpe and Ida Lynn Haag of Topeka; three brothers, Kenneth Schmidt, Duane Schmidt, Daniel Schmidt all of Olpe; seventeen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.
  
  
  He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Robin Schmidt; one son-in-law, Dennis Burton; one sister, Donita Simons; and one brother Larry Schmidt.
  
  
  Clarence was a longtime builder and with his wife owned the Olpe Lumber Co. for 48 years. He was a dedicated member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Olpe Knight of Columbus, a past volunteer fireman and assistant chief for the Olpe Fire Department, he was an Olpe City councilman for many years, a member of the Mid American Lumberman’s Association, the Bluestem Swingers Square Dancers, and most recently, a St. Joseph School Distinguished Alumni. He was an avid gardener, dancer, sportsman, and skilled craftsman.
  
  
  The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe. Fr. Anthony C. Williams will be the celebrant. The Rosary will be recited 6:00 P.M. Sunday, April 10, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Private family interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Schmidt was cremated. The family requests no flowers. There has been a memorial fund established to the St. Joseph School in Olpe, with contributions sent in care of the funeral home.
