Connie L. Somer

Connie Somer, 74, of Emporia, Kansas, died with the same calm resolution as she lived, Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at her home.

Constance Louise Sawyer was born November 19, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of John Thurston and Florence Myrtle (Armfield) Sawyer.

Connie came to Emporia in 1953 to attend Kansas State Teacher’s College where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. After her children were grown, she returned to school to receive her master’s degree in Special Education from Emporia State University. She taught at both Emporia Middle School and Emporia High School for 19 years, until her retirement 17 years ago.

Connie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia; Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority; National Education Association; Kansas National Education Association; Emporia National Education Association; Kansas for Improvement of Nursing Homes; Emporia State University Alumni Association; Sacred Heart Alter Society; sat on the Board of Directors for Hetlinger Developmental Services; and volunteered as a Special Olympics Coach for many years.

Connie married John Laddie Somer on November 11, 1961 at St. Patrick’s Church in Wichita, Kansas. She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, and two loving daughters Anne Nelson, and Joan Sharp both of Chicago. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Ross and Shea Nelson, and Nonie and Annie Sharp.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents; and older brothers, J.T. Sawyer and Bob Sawyer. Connie and her husband cared for their beloved son, John Joseph Somer at the time of his death 15 years ago.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 14, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. Father Richard Warsnak of church will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
