David O. Wilmore, 70, of Americus, Kansas, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Flint Hills Care Center in Emporia.
David was born May 13, 1945 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Carl G. and Mildred (Daetwiler) Wilmore. He graduated from Americus High School in 1963. After high school, David joined the US Army.
After leaving the army, he returned home to work at his passions, farming and riding motorcycles. David spent most of his life farming. He loved spending time with his cattle and working the ground. He, with the help of his parents and son, planted several acres of trees for wind breaks and enjoyed taking care of the animals that came for the shelter.
David was honored with many awards, the Kansas Bankers Association Soil Conservation Award in 1997, and in 1990 for forest conservation as a state-wide outstanding tree farmer with the Kansas Wildlife Habitat Award. David ran the Wilmore Sawmill in Americus from 1976 to 1994 along with his parents and son.
David married LuAnn Criger; they were divorced. He later married Julia Wade on July 22, 1995 in Emporia.
Survivors include: wife, Julia Wilmore; a son, John T. Wilmore of Americus; stepsons, Brian Kitt of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jeff Kitt of Emporia; stepdaughter, Kristina Grayson of Emporia; sister, Doris Lowe of Melvern, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation is planned, with no services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Wild Trust, and sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
