Deborah J. Hensley

September 19, 1953 — March 6, 2011

Deborah J. Hensley, 57, of Emporia, died on March 6, 2011 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Deborah was born on September 19, 1953 in Calexico, California, the daughter of Thomas and Wilma Bennett Ryan. She was married to Don Bryan for over nine years, and helped raise his three boys, Donnie, Jimmy, and Shane. Still today they love her and call her mother. She later divorced and married Michael Hensley on May 14, 1988. Though they had no biological children together, they each accepted their new blended family as their own. Michael later adopted her son David as his own son. Michael survives of the home.

Other surviving family members include: son, David J. Hensley of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Nicole E. Woodward of Fullerton, California; grandchildren, Cora E. Woodward of Fullerton, California, and Adrian E. Hensley, and Jaydon M. Hensley both of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Michael Ryan of Choctaw, Oklahoma; and sister, Sharryn Dickey of Rose Hill, Kansas.

Debbie loved children so much that she involved herself in foster care and a childcare business she operated out of her Emporia home successfully for over 14 years. Debbie was loved by all who knew her for her overwhelmingly generous nature and her tireless devotion to the children she helped raise. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church, and various local childcare organizations and community groups that involved children.

Debbie’s wishes were to be cremated, with a memorial service at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the St. Marks Lutheran Church in Emporia, with Pastor John Davis of the church conducting the service. She also requested that the service be informal and that no one dress up in nice clothes; just plain everyday clothes.

Instead of bringing flowers to her memorial service, she also asked that people make donations to a charity in her honor. The memorial fund is to the SOS Foundation, an organization set up to help battered women. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
