Debra C. Downs, 58 of Emporia, died on September 11, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Debra was born on February 16, 1952 in Enid, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles and Joyce Morlan Schneider. She married Gale Clair Downs on July 22, 1972 in Council Grove, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Daughters: Jaime Downs of Newton, Kansas; Lori Hodge of Emporia; and Kelsey Downs of Emporia.
Parents: Charles and Joyce Schneider of Silver Lake, Kansas.
Sister: Phoebe Doerr of Silver Lake, Kansas
Debra was a teacher for 28 years until she retired in May 2010. She taught her first year in Reading, Kansas, and then went on to Logan Avenue Elementary School in Emporia where she taught fourth grade from 1984 to the 2005 school year. She later went to teach fifth grade from 2005 to her retirement in 2010 at Lowther Middle School South in Emporia. Debra was a member of National Education Association, and she was very involved in school activities.
The Memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Earl Detwiler of the Grace United Methodist Church, Emporia. A private inurnment will be at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Debra Downs Memorial Fund that will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
