Dennis Joe Oller, age 65, of Emporia, Kansas, passed away peacefully Monday, December 19, 2011 at home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born October 16, 1946 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the eldest child of Mrs. Lee Applegate Oller and the late George W. Oller.

Joe had a long and successful career at Dolly Madison Bakery retiring after 26 years, and most recently worked with Tyson Meats in Emporia. He was a devoted family man whose greatest pleasure was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Joe’s quiet nature endeared him to those who knew him as a very polite and sincere person.

He graduated from Woodston High School where he excelled in every sport as a skilled athlete and team leader. He attended both Fort Hays State and Emporia State Universities and was a member of the Kansas National Guard. Together with his wife Barbara, he enjoyed dancing and the fellowship of the Bluestem Swingers Square Dance Club.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara Spencer Oller of Sharon, Kansas; sons, Derek W. (Cleata) Oller of Emporia, Jeffrey S. Oller of Emporia, and Brandon C. Oller of Topeka; a daughter, Dawn R. (Jack) Nestor of Robbinsville, New Jersey; his mother, Lee Oller of Lucas, Kansas; sisters, Regina (Frank) Parsons of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Rebecca (Marty) Dixson of Liberty, Missouri; a brother, Eric (Pat) Oller of Birmingham, Alabama; three grandchildren, Aiden S. Oller of Emporia, Willow Nester of Robbinsville, New Jersey, and Scarlett Oller of Emporia; and several nieces.

Joe’s earthly body was cremated and a memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rob Clausen of the First Baptist Church officiating. Family visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. that Wednesday.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the H. Dale Buck Animal Welfare Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.
