Dolores "Dee" Erma Long

Dolores “Dee” Erma Long, 97, of Emporia, Kansas, died on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Dolores was born on August 7, 1917 in Holyrood, Kansas, the daughter of William and Lula Schnellbacker Ehler. She married Melvin “Shorty” Long in McPherson, Kansas on Flag Day in 1941. He died on April 10, 1969 in Emporia.

Surviving family members include: daughter, Melva Swanson and husband Monty of Wichita; grandchildren, Michelle Garcia, and Mark Swanson; and great-granddaughters, Ashley Garcia, and Alena “Kacie” Garcia.
She is preceded in death by her husband; son William D. Long; and brother, Glenn Ehler.

Dee was a registered nurse at the St. Mary’s Hospital and later was the school nurse at Butcher Children’s School on the Emporia State University campus, where she retired in 1980. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Emporia, the Plymouth Daughters at the church, American Legion Auxiliary, and worked at the snack bar at Newman Regional Health. She also loved to play bridge.

Cremation is planned with a memorial service to be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 28, 2015 in the Chapel at First Congregational Church, Emporia. A private burial will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Melvin “Shorty” and Dolores Long Athletic Scholarship Fund at ESU. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
