Donald A. Brown

Donald A. Brown, born November 23, 1923 in Emporia, Kansas passed away on January 17, 2012 at age 88 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He lived with his son, Colonel (Ret) Donald L. Brown of Monument, Colorado. Mr. Brown worked for Kansas Power & Light for 30 years and then owned and operated Brown's Floral for 24 years with his wife Dorothy T. Brown, until they retired in 1988.


He married Dorothy Theresa Aufleger August 15, 1945 at Kansas City, Missouri. She died September 23, 1998 at Tacoma, Washington after 53 years of marriage. Mr. Brown remarried to Grace Lamb who also passed away September 1, 2011.


Mr. Brown is survived by his son, Colonel (Ret) Donald L. Brown, Monument, Colorado; daughters, Linda D. Thomsen and Christine D. Kellum, both from Emporia; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.


Mr. Brown served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, in the European Theater as a nose gunner on the B-24 Liberator. He was awarded two Air medals and our nations Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat and never lost his love and commitment to the United States of America. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and Order of the Purple Heart.

His funeral service will be held at Roberts-Blue Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Following the funeral, he will be laid to rest with military honors at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
