Doris grew up in Topeka, KS and graduated from Topeka High School, feeling lucky to get to attend the beautiful school. She attended Washburn University for 2 years where she joined the Alpha Phi sorority and made some life-long friendships.
Doris met her husband Chuck Hanna after his graduation from Kansas University (he survives). Chuck was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. They fell in love, got engaged in January and married in May, 1951. Chuck was commander of an anti-aircraft artillery battery in the San Francisco Bay area and Doris worked for the government at the Naval Base on Treasure Island nearby. After their return to Kansas City in 1954, Doris worked for Great Lakes Pipe Line Co. in Kansas City, MO. They moved to Emporia in 1958 and she became a homemaker.
Doris served as a deacon and elder, and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a bridge enthusiast and had even taught beginning bridge lessons a few times in Emporia and said it’s a great game and a wonderful pastime for older people as well as the younger crowd.
Doris served as treasurer for a few years for the Lyon County Republicans. She was a Pink Lady at Newman Regional Health and worked in the snack bar for many years. She liked working at the Friends of the Library book sales collecting money. She also delivered books to shut ins and to people who found it hard to get to the library. Recently, Doris was involved in Meals on Wheels, and also volunteered as an extra driver when needed. She was a member of Trend Club for 50 years or so, as well as Chapter GT of PEO. She played in a Mah-jongg group and was enjoying it more all the time, and also played in several bridge clubs.
Other survivors include three children; daughter Nan Westbrook (Terry) of O’Fallon, MO, son Martin “Marty” Hanna (Donna) of Lawrence, KS, son Jim Hanna (Stefanie) of Ozawkie, KS (near Topeka); five grandchildren; Nick (Alex) Hanna, Taylor and Paige Westbrook, and Peyton and Sydney Hanna; and sister-in-law Jane Reeble. Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister Lou Don (Minich) Cunningham and Lou’s husband Bill, her brother J. Lloyd “Buzz” Minich Jr., and her brother-in-law Barney Reeble.
