Doris Long

Doris Long, Emporia, Kansas, died Wednesday, October 3, 2013 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.


Mrs. Long was born on November 22, 1922 in Smith County, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Marie Rahjes. She graduated from Agra High School, and attended Fort Hays State University. During World War II, she worked as a secretary for the Federal Civil Service in the Base Hospital at Walker Army Air Field near Hays, Kansas.


She worked for eighteen years as a legal secretary for the law firm of Atherton, Hurt, Sanderson, & Vander Velde, now known as Atherton & Huth, in Emporia. She retired in November 1984.


She was a member of Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church in Emporia and served three terms on the church council, being secretary each time; and she served for several years as President of the Women’s Organization, and as a member of the Altar Guild. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Ball-McColm Post 5 Emporia, where she served as a Past President, and was secretary for many years.


She married Donald L. Bruyr on December 28, 1973. He preceded her in death in 1979. She was married to Richard E. Long in Emporia on July 23, 1983. He preceded her in death in 1994.


Survivors include: a son, Bruce Ramsey and his wife, Judy, Aledo, Texas; a daughter, Nita Ramsey, Mound City, Kansas; a son, Kim Ramsey, Bearsville, New York; a stepson, Mack R. Long and his wife, Connie, Missoula, Montana; a sister, Lora Dettmer, Agra, Kansas; a granddaughter, Jerusha Dixon, Decatur, Illinois; a grandson, Ian Ramsey, Overland Park, Kansas; three step-grandchildren, Chad, Jake, and Evie Long; and three great-granddaughters, Ashley Stark, Sydnee Dixon, and Rylee Dixon.

Her grandson, Sean; and sisters, Margaret Kendall, Elfrieda Pagenkopf, and Clara King preceded her in death.


Memorial services will be held at Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 10:30 A.M., conducted by Pastor Susan J. Schubert. Cremation has occurred. A private inurnment service will occur later in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.


Family will receive friends prior to the service.
