Dorothy May Giffin, 87, of Waverly, Kansas, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Sunset Manor in Waverly.
Dorothy was born on December 30, 1927, the daughter of Perry and Wanda Sorensen Phillips. She married Earl Alonzo Giffin on May 22, 1946 in Melvern, Kansas. He died on July 24, 2002 in Emporia, Kansas.
Surviving family members include: son, Gayle Giffin and wife Phyllis of Waverly; daughters, Beverly Cinelli of Emporia, Teresa Diaz and husband Jack of El Cajon, California; sisters, Marcella Chapman and Viola Fisher-Roney both of Waverly; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband.
Dorothy had many jobs throughout her lifetime, but her passion was cooking and baking. She owned and operated the Waverly Café, and she and Earl owned the D and E Concessions trailer that primarily served auction crowds in the area. They also owned and operated P&G Truck Line.
She was a baker extraordinaire. She made pies, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and her claim to fame were the cakes that she made for hundreds of weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. Her other work in the food industry included the White Way Café, Yockey’s Café, Maude’s Café, the livestock sale barn in Waverly, Beto Junction, Red X Café, Mitway Café, Ottawa Café, Peniel Church, and she was a cook in the Waverly schools.
She clerked at the grocery store and made many hot beef sandwiches for the Saddle Club concession stand in Waverly. She worked at Sunset Manor as a CNA and med nurse. She was a bus driver, substitute teacher, a telephone operator, and she papered and painted walls. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waverly, and she belonged to the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She was also a member of Eastern Star and the Homemakers Club.
Cremation is planned, with a memorial service at 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 2, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Waverly. Private inurnment will take place in the Waverly Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Waverly or Hand-In-Hand Hospice, in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
