Dorothy Marie Schmidt

Dorothy Marie Schmidt of Olpe died on Monday, December 30, 2024, surrounded by her family at her home in Olpe.  She was 91.

Dorothy was born on May 30, 1933, in the Maydale Community south of Olpe, the daughter of Paul and Regina Schafer Kuhlmann.  She married Clarence L. Schmidt on September 8, 1951, at Maydale.  He died on April 7, 2011, in Olpe.

She is survived by her sons, Douglas (Laurie) Schmidt of Olpe, Jeffery (Rhonda) Schmidt and Glen (Jacque) Schmidt both of Emporia; daughters, Deanna Burton of Emporia, Judy (Jay) Andersen of Shawnee, and Charlotte (Larry) Coble of Olpe; brother, Richard Kuhlmann of Emporia; twenty grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandchildren Robin Schmidt and Alex Hill, sister Doris Redeker, and her brothers Arnold Kuhlmann, Sonny Kuhlmann, Robert “Bob” Kuhlmann, Roy “Joe” Kuhlmann, and son-in-law Dennis Burton.

Dorothy and her husband Clarence owned and operated the Olpe Lumber Company for over 40 years in the Olpe Community.  She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe as well at the Flying Needles, Bluestem Square Dancers, Mid-American Lumbermen’s Association.  In her free time, she was a seamstress and belonged to Bunko and Bridge Clubs as well as completing arts and crafts with her husband Clarence for the family and community.

Cremation is planned with the rosary at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe.  Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the church.  Burial will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Olpe.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Knights of Columbus or St. Joseph Cemetery can be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O.
