Duane A. Ginavan, 80, Emporia, passed away at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

Duane Alan Ginavan was born in Florence, Kansas on November 10, 1935, the son of Robert W. (Sr.) and Winona Josephine (Britton) Ginavan. He married Mary E. Root on August 28, 1960 in Baxter Springs, Kansas. She survives

Duane moved, with his family, to Topeka at age 5. He attended Crane Junior High School and graduated from Topeka High School where he was co-captain of the football team his senior year. Duane enrolled in Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma where he attended for 4 years, transferring to the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas for a 5th year of undergraduate study. He remained at the University of Kansas for 2 years of Medical School, then 2 years at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. His internship was at Good Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona, for a year, and did his family practice residency at Monterey County Hospital, Salinas, California.

Duane received a letter from Uncle Sam and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, receiving his basic training at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio for 2 years providing care for air men and women and their families. Dr. Ginavan began family practice in Emporia in August of 1966. He joined the practice of Ken Lohmeyer, M.D., Don Coldsmith, M.D., and Ed Campbell, M.D.. Duane was in family practice tor 37 years. 34 of those in Emporia. His busy practice was helped greatly by the addition of Ken Wright, M.D., and later with Suzanne Ciotti, M.D., and Kim Schmid, M.D., as well as Advanced Practice Nurses, Margaret Wright and Sherry Smiley. During his years of practicing medicine, he was president of the medical group at both Newman Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital.

While attending Phillips University, he became a missionary candidate in the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church). His practice of medicine became his mission and his patients were his friends as well as patients. He always enjoyed starting his workday by drinking a cup of coffee with other physicians in the doctor’s lounge of Newman Hospital. A warm relationship was evident among the physicians in the community.

Upon Duane’s arrival in Emporia, the doctor doing Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) exams retired from the practice. Duane became certified to be a FAA examiner for those who flew planes and were required periodic medical examinations.

His memberships included American Medical Assoc., University of Kansas Alumni Assoc., KU Medical Center Alumni Assoc., Kansas Medical Society, American Legion, Salvation Army Board, and Deacon Emeritus of the First Christian Church.

Upon retirement, he often would walk to ESU Student Union and vocally read books, and this was recorded on tape for the “Talking Books” program. He attended the Salvation Army meeting monthly and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He began painting pictures on canvas with acrylics. One year he wrote an unpublished book entitled “Olympic Stranger.”

He always loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, music programs, and theatre performances. His children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews were always welcomed and loved by him and they loved him in return. His children include Dana (Joe) Witten, Steve Ginavan, and Dan (Jen) Ginavan, Grandchildren include Josie (Zach) Kindhart, Blaze Witten, Broc and Bria Ginavan, Izzy, Logan, Tenley, and Declan Ginavan. One great-granddaughter is Clara Kindhart. His brothers are Robert W. (Kathryn) Ginavan, Don (Roberta) Ginavan, and Roger (L’Ange) Ginavan. His deceased family includes his father, mother, and daughter, Laura.

Early in his practice of medicine, he delivered many babies and this always brought him joy. Duane had a “cup ½ full” personality and his positive outlook and calm demeanor seemed reassuring to many. His Irish wit also added another dimension to his interaction with others.

A memorial service will be conducted at the First Christian Church, Emporia, on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by Dr. David Webb of the church. Inurnment will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia

The family will receive friends in the church parlor an hour before the service.

Dr. Ginavan will lie in state through Tuesday night at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. After that time cremation will occur.

The family requests no flowers. As he spent much of his working hours at Newman Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, memorials are suggested to Newman Regional Health Foundation and First Christian Church, Emporia.
