Dwane "Knocky" "Red" Robinson

April 8, 1922 — October 10, 2012

A visitation for Dwane “Knocky”, “Red” Robinson, 90, Emporia, Kansas, will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M., Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Dwane passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. He chose cremation, and his family has honored those wishes.

Dwane was born on April 8, 1922 in Emporia, the son of James and Lena (Musselman) Robinson. He married Rosemary Lynn of May 25, 1946 in Lyndon, Kansas. They had two children: Hal (Janet) Robinson, Safety Harbor, Florida, and Debbie (Ron) Miller, Lawrence, Kansas; one grandson Brent (Laurie) Robinson, and two great-granddaughters, Gracen and Ella Robinson of Mount Juliet, Tennessee. Dwane truly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and his greyhound Lilly; all survive. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, who will be missed but never forgotten.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on board the USS Kretchmer, and saw action in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Formosa, the Atlantic, and Mediterranean. After the war, Dwane worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until he retired in June of 1982. He was a member of the Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, and the Emporia Antique Car Club, where he restored a 1929 Model A Ford which was later donated.

Dwane and Rosie established a reunion for all officers and crew members of the USS Kretchmer (1943-1973) in October of 1988 in Emporia. The annual reunions have continued to this day, rotating between various crew members’ hometowns across the United States, and now the younger veterans are continuing this tradition. These reunions have been well-attended by both officers and crew, and have been a true highpoint over the years.

Dwane was preceded in death by his siblings, Jim, Floyd, Johnnie, and Bud Robinson, and Maxine Bradshaw.

Dwane loved baseball and followed the Kansas City Royals faithfully through good times and bad. You would often observe Dwane and Rosie sitting on their front porch visiting with neighbors, sharing stories, homemade goodies, political advice, and keeping a constant, watchful eye on the Whildin neighborhood. He also regularly attended a morning coffee group at the local Kwik Shop where many of world’s supreme issues were discussed, but likely never resolved.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Brock Kretsinger, and also the staff members of Newman Hospital and Presbyterian Manor for their excellent care of our loved one.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Emporia Humane Society or Emporia Friends of the Zoo in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Dwane "Knocky" "Red" Robinson, please visit our flower store.
