Dwight Otis Metcalf also known as ‘De-White’ or ‘The Chief’, of Emporia, passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at his home. He was 76.
Born on August 12, 1947, in Breckenridge, Colorado, the family relocated to Fort Scott, KS. After high school he proudly served in the US Navy. He graduated from Emporia Kansas State College, was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and then an agent for Farmers Insurance until retirement.
Dwight married his best friend, Linda Johnson in 1971, she survives. He is also survived by children Chris Metcalf of Emporia, Tara Hall (Whitney) of Emporia and Tony Metcalf (Abby) of Overland Park; brother Dale Metcalf (Kay) of Columbia, MO and sister Carolyn Mann of Sedgwick. Many nieces and nephews as well as grandchildren Logan, Chloe, Whitney, Levi, Waylon, Walker Dwight, Mick, Winnie, Macy, Kennedy, John Wesley, and Madelyn adored him. He is proceded in death by his parents – Otis and Helen Metcalf.
Over the years Dwight had many hobbies which included most things outdoors. He spent many hours on La Jolla Beach, California and still considered himself a “beach boy”. Dwight is also remembered for his time spent enjoying sports, whether that be pitching in a softball game, golfing with friends, supporting his favorite teams, or watching his kids and grandkids participate in activities. The Chief was a favorite of many and would do anything for anybody. He was often the star of the show when you didn’t know he was around and did his best to make memories or have a good time with anybody in his presence.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Emporia on March 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with military honors. We hope that everybody will come Celebrate in their favorite ESU, Chiefs or Royals attire. Following the service, all are invited to gather at 627 Event Space, 627 Commercial St. Emporia.
