Edward John McKernan III, rural Admire, Kansas, died at his home on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the age of 74.
  
  
  Edward John McKernan III was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 17, 1936, the son of Edward J. (Jr.) and Blanche Phenicie McKernan. He married Doris Ann Yockey June 13, 1959. She survives of the home.
  
  
  Surviving family members include: his wife; sons, Edward John McKernan IV, and wife Kathy, Tucson, Arizona, Michael Patrick McKernan of Topeka, Kansas, William Francis McKernan and wife, Sarah, Raeford, North Carolina, and Daniel Mark McKernan, Emporia, Kansas; daughters, Connie Jean Tilton, and husband, Steve, Berryton, Kansas, Catherine Ann Hull, and husband, Deven, League City, Texas; sisters, Sally Ann Nousek, Lindhurst, Ohio, and Mary Lou Klenke, and husband, Ken, San Antonio, Texas; and twelve grandchildren.
  
  
  He was preceded in death by his parents.
  
  
  Mr. McKernan was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School, Shaker Heights, Ohio (1955) and Washburn University, Topeka (1958). He was a radio broadcaster and owner of the radio station KVOE in Emporia for 27 years, retiring in 1984.
  
  
  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, and numerous civic, charitable, and community organizations.
  
  
  Cremation is planned.
  
  
  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. with Father Richard Warsnak, celebrant. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas at a later date.
  
  
  The family requests no flowers. Memorials have been established with the Emporia Community Foundation or Washburn University Endowment Association. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
