Elaine Virginia (Cray) Edwards, 87, of Emporia passed away Monday, December 04, 2017, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, Kan.
Elaine was born May, 6, 1930, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Glenn and Nell (Leibengood) Cray. She married Charles Franklin Edwards in 1959 and later divorced.
Surviving family members include: sons, Marc Edwards (Sheri) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Eric Edwards of Lawrence, Kansas; grandchildren, Courtney, Allyse, and Jason.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Glenn Cray Jr. and John Cray.
Elaine was a professor of Music at Emporia State University from 1962 till 1997. She received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Chicago Musical College. She also completed a year of post-graduate study at the Juilliard School of Music and doctoral work at Indiana University, Bloomington. She was a Roe R. Cross professor and was inducted into the Beach Hall of Distinction at Emporia State in 2008. Following her retirement, Elaine donated her extensive collection of sheet music to the Emporia State School of Music so her love of musical arts may live on in future generations.
She was an active member of PEO, Research Club, the Emporia Arts Council and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, to which she donated her baby grand piano. Talented musicians now play that instrument during a concert series that bears Elaine’s name.
A celebration of life and reception following will honor Elaine’s faith and her love of family, friends and music at 12:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2017 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia, Kan. Memorial contributions to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church or ESU Foundation Elaine Edwards Scholarship Fund at Emporia State University can be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
