Eleanor Emma Nuessen Brown was born September 21, 1916 at Olpe, Kansas and died October 22, 2011 in Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, Kansas. She was the daughter of Barbara Brown Nuessen & J. Herman Nuessen. She married Seraphin “Sam” J. Brown January 25, 1943 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe, where they were members for 30 years. They moved to Emporia, in the fall of 1973.
As a young woman she worked at the Olpe Post Office and then as a mother and housewife. As her children got older she worked at Emporia State University in the cafeteria, and for Dolly Madison beginning in 1965, from where she retired in 1981 after 16 years. She re-entered the workforce and worked part-time at Butcher Children’s School in the food department for another 16 years, from where she retired at age 81.
After retiring Eleanor kept busy with numerous volunteer and fun-filled activities. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society, and belonged to St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary until the hospital closed. She served as a lector and Holy Communion minister at Sacred Heart for years. Also for many years she volunteered at Presbyterian Manor, Flint Hills Care Center, and Holiday Resort to pray the rosary with the Catholics and took Communion to them one Sunday a month.
Activities with her children and grandchildren were her most enjoyable times: fishing and visiting Chase County with son John and spouse, Sue Ann; taking long trips with daughters, Janet, Mary, their spouses and grandchildren to the southeast, northeast, southwest and west coast; and visiting Frances in Texas were all a source of fun for her. She was so active that her youngest grandchild described her to his friends as the “Schwartzeneger of grandmas”.
She is preceded in death by her husband, who died July 17, 1975; her mother and father; seven brothers: Peter, Nick, John, Herman, Lawrence, Louis and August Nuessen; and four sisters: Mary Voeste, Ann Wecker, Gertrude Zeller and Lucy Marnell; and a grandson, Jason Moss.
Surviving are four children: Janet Moss (Joel Wakham) of Kansas City, Mary Gayle (Rick) Heins of Parker, Colorado, John (Sue Ann) A.Brown of Emporia, and Frances (Don) Booker of Boerne, Texas.; nine grandchildren: Angela Moss, Allison (Brian) Moss Tuttle, Andrew and Alex Moss, Eric (Misty) and Rebecca Heins, Melissa (Dustin) Swift Newton, Jimmy (April) Swift, and Shawn Booker; seven great-grandchildren: Brayden and Bennett Tuttle, Isabella Lutz, River Heins, Jared and Adam Swift, and Elayna Newton.
