Elva “Lea” Wise, Ph.D. (85) of Emporia, Kansas, formerly of Gunnison, Colorado, passed away Saturday April 30, 2011 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Elva Lea Wise, the daughter of Archie Franklin and Opal Beatrice (Chapman) Wise, was born on December 25, 1925 in Conway Springs, Kansas.
She graduated from Conway Springs High School in 1943 and received her B.S. in Business Administration from University of Wichita (now Wichita State University) in 1947. She then received her Master’s Degree in Business Education in 1959 and her Ph.D. in Business Education in 1968 from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Lea was a Commercial Instructor at Whitewater High School in Whitewater, Kansas from 1947-1949 and at Buhler Rural High School, Buhler, Kansas from 1951 to 1952. She was a secretary and office worker at the Evans Motor Company in Wichita, Kansas, and from 1952 to 1957 she was the secretary to the President and General Manager of Control Cells Corp. of Wichita and Boulder, Colorado. While attending graduate school in Colorado, she was secretary at the Rocky Flats Plant of Dow Chemical Co. in Golden, Colorado. In 1959 she was a Professor of Business at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, until her retirement in August of 1984.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Pi Epsilon, National Business Education Assoc., Colorado Business Education Assoc., and Mountain-Plains Business Education Assoc. She was a Methodist, and attended various Methodist churches including the First United Methodist Church in Emporia.
She is survived by a niece, Patricia Ann Dorsey and a nephew, Donald Rex Wise, both of Emporia. Her brother, Ellis Rex Wise, and a niece, Nancy Kay Wise preceded her in death.
