Emma Lou (Rains) VanGundy, 93, of Americus, Kansas, died May 25, at Presbyterian Manor where she had resided with her husband, Wayne. She was born October 3, 1924, in Emporia, to the late Henry Elliott and Lucille Rosetta “Rosie” (Proehl) Rains.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 29, at 7:00-8:30 p.m, at Roberts Blue Barnett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, at 10:30 A.M. at Grace Methodist Church, 2 Neosho Street, Emporia, Kansas.  Burial will be at Americus Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Grace Methodist Church.

Emma Lou graduated from Americus High School in 1942 and attended business college at ESU. She was employed during WWII at Montgomery Ward business office.

She married the love of her life, Wayne Willis VanGundy, on February 17, 1946, after he returned from serving in WWII. They enjoyed 72 wonderful years, working together in partnership on their family farm. In addition to being the ultimate bookkeeper in the farm partnership she was actively involved in 4-H and home extension leadership, secretary of Lyon County Fair Office, and a founding member of 40th Farmerettes Home Extension Unit. She was a lifelong member of Grace Methodist Church. She was an avid quilter, and lovingly made quilts for all her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 10 year old son, David Elliott VanGundy; her parents; sisters Wilma (Orville) Smith, Mildred

(Edwin) Chew, Edith (Warren) Stonebraker; brothers: John (Trudy) Rains; Harold (Lola) Rains.

Emma Lou is survived by her husband, Wayne. Daughters Marcia (Terry) Boggs, Ft. Worth, Texas; Marlene (Bill) Penny, Lawrence, Kansas. Son; Michael (Sharon) VanGundy, Americus, Kansas. Twelve grandchildren; Kris(Melissa) Boggs, Ashley (Brian) Miller, Laura (Bryan) Hedges; Nathan Penny, Sarah (Wyatt) Smith; Jonathan (Kim) Penny; Scott (Sarah) Penny; Carissa (Scott) Marshall; Amy (Ryan) Shatzer; John (Jodi) VanGundy; Rachelle (Bren) Fisher; Natasha VanGundy and 22 great grandchildren (with two more due this summer!!) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
