Emma H. Voorhees, 97, formerly of Americus, Kansas, died Thursday morning, September 4, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Cottonwood Falls.

Emma H. Smith was born in Emporia, Kansas, on May 4, 1917, the daughter of Robert and Hannah Etta (Pierce) Smith. She married Henry F. Voorhees in Americus on August 17, 1935. He died March 6, 1997 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Surviving members of the family include: sons, Frank Voorhees and William “Bill” Voorhees, both of Emporia, Donald Voorhees, Waverly, Kansas, and Jerry Voorhees, Americus; daughters, Mary Buckbee, Emporia, and Betty Sue Young, Council Grove, Kansas; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Wayne, seven sisters, and three brothers.

Emma loved taking care of her family and gardening.

Cremation is planned, with graveside services to be held at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, west of Olpe, Kansas, on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. Following the service, the family will gather with friends at the Chicken House in Olpe.
