Esther Faye Grimmett Mechtley Johnson Stubbs
Esther Stubbs died Friday, November 29, 2015 at McCrite Plaza Health Center in Topeka, Kansas. She was 89.
The daughter of Ernest William Grimmett and Lola Inez Killion Grimmett, she was born March 23, 1926 on the family farm near Americus, Kansas.
She married William M. Mechtley on July 11, 1943. They had two sons, and she is survived by Dean Mechtley and wife Ginny of Elk Falls, Kansas, Ken Mechtley and wife Marsha of Topeka; and grandson, Kevin Mechtley and wife Lindsay of Shawnee, Kansas.
After Bill died, she married Lloyd Johnson April 23, 1983. Lloyd then died and Esther met Merlyn Dale Stubbs at her 50th high school reunion. They married May 9th, 1998 and had 20 years together in Los Altos Hills, California, before he passed last year. These three unions produced a family for her of 10 stepchildren, many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, William Grimmett of Webb City, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Sisters Erma Gene Mechtley, Elaine Rust, Mary Sill, Ione Shoup; and brother, Cleo “Bud” Grimmett preceded her in death.
Esther worked at Hallmark and was a manager at Alco in Emporia. She served as Past President of VFW Post #1980 Auxiliary, and was active in the Cub Scouts and PTA. She was always ready for a card game or bingo, enjoyed camping, dancing, and was great fun to be around.
Graveside services will be Friday December 4, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Patio Garden of Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Christine Potter, First United Methodist Church, Emporia.
Memorial Contributions to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, or the Emporia VFW Ladies Auxiliary may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
