Eugene W. “Gene” Gerstner, Emporia, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Newman Regional Health, Emporia. He was 82.
Eugene W. Gerstner was born at Lyndon, Kansas on July 2, 1929, the son of Otto and Alta (Ramshaw) Gerstner. He married Doris Smulling at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas on October 30, 1948. She survives of the home.
Other surviving family members are: his daughter, Linda L. Dieker and her husband, Leonard, Emporia; son, Randy E. Gerstner and his wife, Jan, Emporia; a brother, Lawrence E. Gerstner, Topeka, Kansas; and four grandchildren, Jamie Van Hecke and her husband, Josh, Jason Gerstner, Jessie Smith and her husband Logan, and Cami Dieker.
Gene was an agent for the Prudential Life Insurance Company for 25 years, later opening the Gerstner Insurance Agency until he closed the firm and retired in 1990.
He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, serving in Germany as a forward position radio operator, and Chaplain Assistant. Gene was a member of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
Gene was a member of First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Earlier in his life, he was active as an adult leader with Boy Scout Troop #165, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster and also as Scoutmaster. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, and had received the District Award of Merit. He also helped with his daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. Gene enjoyed painting, and was a member of the Chase County Artist Guild, and was past president.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2012 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Ken Armstrong, West Side Baptist Church. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, with Military Graveside Honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening, February 16, 2012 from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
