Evelyn Ruth (Janzen) Brunner died January 4, 2013 at her home in Emporia, Kansas. She was 89.
The daughter of Henry P. and Susie (Reimer) Janzen, Evelyn was born April 15, 1923 in Newton, Kansas. On October 17, 1946, she married Ralph H. Brunner in Sacramento, California. Ralph died June 14, 2010; they were married 63 years. Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Anita Brunner; a daughter, Pamela Brunner; a grandson, Shane Brunner; and her beloved “puppies,” Scooter and Angel, all of Emporia.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, John and Willard Janzen; and two sisters, Ella Remer and Dora Wolf.
Evelyn was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She found her greatest joy spending time with her family/relatives and her church. Watching her children engage in school activities and sports was an enjoyment to her. Evelyn served as a “room mother” at Mary Herbert Elementary School, and a den mother for Cub Scout pack 109. Her hobbies were many; at the top of her list were camping and fishing. She was an accomplished seamstress, who even tailored several suits her husband wore. Evelyn enjoyed art, painting, crocheting, gardening, growing African Violets, and a variety of other crafts.
During World War II, she was the assistant postmaster in North Newton, KS. She also worked in the yard goods/notions section of the Woolworths store in Newton until she moved to California to marry Ralph. For much of her married life, she was a homemaker. After raising her family, she volunteered to teach sewing classes at Westside Baptist Christian School for a number of years.
She was a member of the Westside Baptist Church, its choir, and the Senior Soldiers class.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Westside Baptist Church in Emporia. Burial will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Kansas. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, January 9, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
