Evelyn Murphy (102) passed away September 8th, 2015 at Holiday Resort, Emporia, under Hospice care.

Evelyn was born October 20th, 1912 to Edward & Edith Jones in the family farm home that her father had just finished building. Her favorite memory, as a child, was being outside playing under the Catalpa tree (know to most of the children as the banana tree).

She started her education in a one-room schoolhouse outside Olpe (Stony Ridge). She graduated from Emporia High School in 1931. She then attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia until she was married to Alex Murphy December 22, 1934. Together they settled down on a farm southwest of Olpe. They were married over 65 years before Alex passed away.

Evelyn had four children, Shirley Pearson (husband Clare) Emporia, Mary Edith Slack (husband Jack) Tulsa, Oklahoma, David Murphy (wife Judy) Emporia, and Jerry Murphy (wife Sharman) Emporia. Grandchildren are: Mary Ann Sanford (Steve) Emporia, Cindy Rooke (Keith) Virginia, Deanna Wagaman (Marc) Emporia, Lindy Miller (David) KS, Danny Pearson (Sarah) Emporia, Angie Cringan (David) Florida, Chris Chamberlain (Pam) Salina, KS, Scott Chamberlain (Beth) Altadena, CA, Mike Murphy (Lynn) Lawrence, KS, Ryan Murphy (Sarah) Osage City, KS, Aric Murphy (Joy) Ft. Collins, CO, Mark Murphy (Ashley) Travis Air Force Base, CA, Morgan Murphy, Emporia, Meghan Allen (Brock) Houston, TX. Evelyn was also blessed with 28 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She has a brother, Darrell Jones (Lois Lyne) Gladstone, MO; and a sister, Allene Lane, Clay Center, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex; her parents; her brother, Ralph Jones; a brother-in-law, John (Blackie) Lane; and a son-in-law, Clare Pearson.


Evelyn taught Sunday school for the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was a member of The First United Methodist Women, Emporia Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Verdigris Valley Extension Homemakers Unit, and the Lyon County Extension Unit. She was the Emporia Gazette Women of the Week in 1967.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M., Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Emporia. The funeral will follow at 3:00 P.M. Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Olpe, Kansas.
