Fernando E. Vergara Camero

Fernando E. Vergara, 69, of Emporia, Kansas, passed away peacefully and in the company of all his loved ones in Emporia on January 18, 2015. He had struggled with Leukemia for the past nine months.

Fernando was born in Bogota, Colombia, to Samuel and Cochita Vergara. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carmen Correa de Vergara. They had two sons: Andres and wife Daisy, and grandson Jake of Seattle, Washington, and Daniel and wife Carolina of Miami, Florida. He is also survived by two brothers, Samuel (Helena) and Ricardo of Bogota, Colombia; and two sisters, Helena Nolan (John) and Marina Zeller both of Kansas.

Fernando graduated from Pontificia Javeriana University in Bogota as a Sociologist and obtained a Master of Science from Emporia State University. He did internships at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, United States, as Scholar of the Fulbright Commission and Laspau, breaking ground on research on the use of satellite communication technology when applied to an undergraduate education level and at Emporia State University, where he wrote the book Sexology and Society - Sociologic aspects of sexuality in Colombia-, published by the Industrial University of Santander.

He was a professor at the Santander Industrial University for 30 years, representative of the Colombian President in the Superior Council of Santander Industrial University, Deputy Director of Santander Technological Units, and he served as Chief of Science and Technology Office for Santander’s Governor, as well as T.V Commissioner of the National Commission of Television in Bogota, Colombia.

As columnist of the newspaper “Vanguardia Liberal” from Bucaramanga, Colombia, his discussion topics specialized in demographics, communications, development, international, and university matters. He was a member of the Academy of History of Santander. After settling in the United States, he became involved with the Kansas School District, were he worked for 12 years. In 2013 he was awarded the E.L. & Z. Irene Hopkins Foundation award for his excellence as a school district educator.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, with burial following at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia.
