Francis E. Hurtig, formerly of Hartford, Kansas, and a resident of Oro Valley, Arizona, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Odyssey Hospice, Tuscon, Arizona. He was 87.
Francis Edward Hurtig was born at Hartford on July 6, 1924, the son of Francis T. “Frank” and Christina M. (Beschka) Hurtig. He married Helen Ida Haag in Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe, Kansas on December 28, 1950. She died in Oro Valley on November 3, 2008.
Surviving family members include: two sons, David Hurtig, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Jay Hurtig and his wife, Suzanne, of Lawrence, Kansas; three daughters, Jan Hopkins and husband Tony, of Phoenix, Arizona, Teresa Ajello and husband Jim, of Emporia, and Becky Hurtig and husband Walter Craig, of Derby, Kansas; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hurtig was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sisters, Josephine Francis and Geraldine Gilbert; and a brother, Anthony Hurtig.
Mr. Hurtig, together with his father and brother, Tony, started Hurtig Implement in Hartford as a dealership for John Deere farm equipment. In 1972, the dealership was moved to K-99 south of Emporia on what was to become known as John Deere Road. The dealership was later closed. Beginning in the late 50’s, Mr Hurtig also worked as a rural letter carrier for 41 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the Saint Mary Catholic Church, Hartford, and also the Santa Catalina Catholic Church, Oro Valley, Arizona. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion of Emporia.
Mr. Hurtig served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Hartford, on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. The mass will be celebrated by Father Anthony Williams, of the church. Interment will be in Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery, south of Hartford.
The Rosary will be recited at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Kansas, Thursday evening, February 9, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. The family will receive friends following the Rosary.
Memorials have been established to the Parish Hall building fund of Saint Mary Catholic Church, or to Smile Train. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
