Frank Anthony Malambri, Jr.

Frank Anthony Malambri, Jr., 87, of Emporia, Kansas, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia.

Frank Malambri, Jr., the son of Frank and Onalee DeJean Malambri, was born October 1, 1923, in Quincy, Illinois. He married Pauline “Penni” Schmedemann on December 20, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia.

Mr. Malambri is survived by: one daughter, Valerie White and her husband Doug White, of Emporia; three grandchildren, Joselyn Hummel, Nick White, and Natalie Ball; and six great-grandchildren, Saige, Ethan, Olivia, Mitchell, Lillie, and Emmett.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, in 1996, and two brothers, William and Nick.

After high school, Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. As a member of the Army Band, he traveled to bases playing for other troops. After serving in the military, Frank moved to Emporia to attend the Kansas State Teachers College, where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music Education. He taught band at Halstead High School for 13 years, and also at the College of Emporia, where he was instrumental in bringing notable jazz performers for C of E jazz clinics. He retired from teaching music in 1989 from Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix, Arizona.

Frank was an active member of the Lions Club, Retired Teachers Association, and was a volunteer at Newman Regional Health where he was past President and active member in the Hospital Auxiliary. He was a conductor for the Emporia Municipal Band, and played the clarinet for decades.

Cremation is planned.

The Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, with Father Rich Warsnak as Celebrant. Interment will immediately follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Military Honors will be conducted by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign War.
