Frank M. Powell

Frank M. Powell, a resident of Roeland Park, Kansas, and formerly of Emporia, Kansas, died Friday, June 7, 2013 at a Lenexa care center at the age of 84.


Frank was born on May 25, 1929 at Emporia, the son of Perry and Thelma (Touche) Powell. He married Patricia June VanCleave at Emporia on March 14, 2003.

Mr. Powell was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. During his service he received three Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Distinguished Unit Citation, and the Korean Service Medal with 5 Battle Stars. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Overland Park, and the Order of the Purple Heart.


Following his military service, Frank was a truck driver for Santa Fe Trailways Trucking Company for many years.


Surviving family members include: his daughter, Lisa Aldrich-Jacobs, Roeland Park; his son, Kevin C. Powell, Roeland Park; and grandchildren, Nicholas, Andrea, and Melanie Aldrich.


He was preceded in death by his wife, and twin brother, Perry.


Frank enjoyed buying cars, watching football and basketball, and cruising Craigslist. He loved his children and grandchildren; his dog, Chip, who will be buried with him; and his cat, Tipper, who stayed with him at the care center, and now lives with family members.


Funeral services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11:00 A.M., conducted by Father Rich Warsnak of the church, and Chaplain Tim Lister, Southern Care Hospice, Lenexa. Interment, with graveside services by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball McColm Post #5, American Legion, will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia.


The family will receive friends in the church parish hall Wednesday from 10:00 AM. until the time of service
