Frederick Allen Masters, Sr., Emporia, formerly of Paola, died Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Newman Regional Health, Emporia, at the age of 96.
Fred was born in McClouth, Kansas on July 21, 1920, the son of Arkley A. and Ida Nell (Brown) Masters. He married Naomi M. Moore at Olathe, Kansas on February 21, 1941. She survives of the home.
Besides his wife, Naomi, he is survived by a son; Frederick Allen Masters, Jr. of Emporia, two daughters; Peggy Mooney, Emporia and Patricia Cellier, Lansing, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Virginia K. Holloman, a brother, three sisters, and a great-great-granddaughter, Nova Hernandez.
Mr. Masters was a member of the West Side Baptist Church, Emporia. He served as a Seaman First Class in the US Navy during World War II, and was a member of Vernon Buck VFW Post 7957 in Emporia, The American Legion of Paola, the Paola Masonic Lodge, and the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers. He was a steel guitar player and vocalist and had the first all-electric western swing band in Kansas, Freddy Masters and the Trail Riders. He had attended the Kansas City Music Conservatory.
During his lifetime he worked as a business manager, salesman, and dairy farmer, and had worked for TWA Airlines. He also owned Masters Distributing.
Funeral Services will be conducted at the West Side Baptist Church, Emporia, on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 A.M. conducted by Pastor Ken Armstrong of the church. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 P.M. at the Paola Cemetery, Paola, Kansas with military services by the Miami County Combined VFW and American Legion Honors Unit.
The family will receive friends at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30.
